Working with pastel

Red Jetty pastel on paper 10 x 11.5 inches

I sometimes develop painting ideas by tacking paper to a piece of mounted drywall in my basement and bringing out my pastels. A lot of the time the pastel is the finished piece and not a stepping stone to an oil painting. Facing a blank canvas that has been mounted on a stretcher, stretched, stapled and gessoed can be pretty daunting. Working with pastel sticks is very spontaneous and if you make a mess of it you just grab another sheet of paper and go again. This is a piece I recently made and I titled it Red Jetty. It measures 10 x 11.5 inches.
