Serendipity

I need to become more adventurous and learn to embrace the accidents in the creation of a painting. I understand this intellectually but I do not always act accordingly. I’m tempted to plan everything out in advance and I suppose that is just the way a lot of artists work, but it’s also valuable to be “reckless” on occasion and surprise yourself.

I’m starting to become more intrigued by collage, as I mentioned in a previous post, because the most exciting juxtaposition of imagery often comes about by sheer accident. I have begun cutting out and collecting images from magazines and printouts. These are still just randomly stashed in a couple of boxes and as I spread these out I will sometimes see two or more totally unrelated photos that can give one that jolt of pleasant surprise that artists find particularly exciting.
